I post this song every year at this time. I wrote 21 Guns after reading about the murder of Corporal Nathan Cirillo while standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa in 2014. This song was inspired by the news coverage of his son Marco at his funeral. Lest we forget.
21 GUNS
V1
There’s a little boy in the next room
And he’s asking where his daddy’s got to
He’s only three
But even he knows when something called lonely has got you
And he needs you to tell him a story
About princes and horses and kings
And when it’s through
He’s gonna ask you if only angels have wings
And you just put your brave face on
And you take him in your arms
And you keep him safe from harm
CHORUS
Sometimes broken hearts don’t show
You cry inside but don’t let go
You tell yourself he’ll never know
That sometimes broken hearts don’t show
V2
There’s a long black car in the driveway
Shining in the morning sun
You brush back his hair
And you dress him with care
And you hold back the tears till it’s done
Maybe someday you’ll tell him the story
But right now that would be wrong
Cos he’s too little and you’re too brittle
And right now you’ve got to be strong
So you just keep that brave face on
And you take him in your arms
And you keep him safe from harm
CHORUS
Sometimes broken hearts don’t show
You cry inside but don’t let go
You tell yourself he’ll never know
That sometimes broken hearts don’t show
V3
There’s a church bell ringing this morning
There’s not a cloud in the sky
He holds on tight as those angels take flight
And those 21 guns say goodbye….
CHORUS
Sometimes broken hearts don’t show
You cry inside but don’t let go
You tell yourself he’ll never know
That sometimes broken hearts don’t show
Sometimes broken hearts don’t show
